Up! Through the Atmosphere!

A book sits open with a pencil between the pages. Resting on the page closest to the camera is a card with two hearts joined by a plus sign and the word "Forever."

It’s time to get into this week’s Friday 10! Posting a little bit late because y’person spent the entire day thinking it was Thursday for some reason. Anyway, let’s take a look at this 10, shall we? Remember, if you know the title and the artist, get in the comments. Beyond that, don’t go searching the answers on any search engines, and I’ll give you credit for naming a cover version — but only if it’s one I can find.

  1. We’ve made a stellar start to find the jungle’s heart (2005)
  2. They wouldn’t listen to the fact that I was a genius — the man say, “We got all that we can use” (1973)
  3. I lit a cigarette, picked up a monkey skull to go (1987)
  4. Times when the day is like a play by Sartre (1993)
  5. Oh, fiddle-dee-dink, I can dance with a drink in my hand (1962)
  6. It’s my own design, it’s my own remorse (1985)
  7. Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare (1969)
  8. And say, “You’re hair’s on fire, you must’ve lost your wits” (2010)
  9. You can kiss a hundred boys in bars, shoot another shot (2024)
  10. Can’t face the world sober and dopeless (2024)

Last week’s 10 was largely unsolved, with Frodis Caper taking away three of the ten lyrics and nobody else getting a guess in. Some of those songs were hits, but admittedly there were a few deep cuts as well. The unidentified songs were:

  • “You do somethin’ sus, kiss my cute ass bye-bye” – Sabrina Carpenter, “Good Graces”
  • “He’s in a bunch of movies — really stupid movies” – Juliana Hatfield Three, “Spin the Bottle” (from the Reality Bites soundtrack)
  • “‘Cause these legislators get paid for the booty claps, so I gotta bring the kufi back” – BUSDRIVER, “Ministry of the Torture Couch”
  • “Get your act together, we could be just fine” – Spice Girls, “Wannabe”
  • “You got the power and I got the shame” – POE, “Junkie”
  • “I stumble into town just like a sacred cow” – David Bowie, “China Girl”
  • “Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn” – Barenaked Ladies, “Pinch Me”

As always, you can hear them all (and the bonus point!) in a YouTube playlist.
